4th Mediterranean Currach Regatta, Barcelona, 18th March 2012

Since 2009 Iomramh has organized the Mediterranean Currach Regatta in the Port of Barcelona. Participation in this annual event has grown in numbers year after year, bringing international crews to the competition. The regatta has become both a sports event and a celebration of Irish tradition and culture on Mediterranean waters.

In 2011 the Coonagh Currach Club, from Limerick, Ireland, traveled to Barcelona to compete and demonstrate the full capacity of a currach in the hands of a skilled and experienced crew. More crews from Ireland came to participate in 2012, as well as more crews from Norway, Catalonia and elsewhere, which meant more craic and more sport for this wonderful event.

The regatta was divided into two categories depending on the experience of the rowers, Amateurs and Professionals. The winners of the Amateur league were the Curran brothers (picture) from Barcelona, a crew rowing for the The Quiet Man pub in the city centre. Well done Adrià, Dani and Ray! The Coonagh Currach Club crew  from Limerick stepped up for the second time to receive the Professional trophy from the hands of the Honorary Consul of Ireland in Barcelona, Mr. Cucurella.

There were Black Angus burgers from Dawn Meats with Kerrygold cheddar cheese served at the party, as well as Estrella Damm beverages. Music was provided by Drónán and Aires Celtes performed traditional Irish dancing in the terrace. Later on Sinead & the Sinners made the crowd move with their funky tunes and DJ Ben put the final note to a great day spinning real gold.

Thanks to our sponsors and participants to make the day another success!!! See you all next year!

Had a problem registering my team for the 2012 currach regatta. Was only able to register myself as the leader. Was transferred to a strange page when I pressed submit.

So: My team goes under the name of TEAM EYOLF and consists of Susan and Eldfrid in addition to myself. We are all women, but we bring along a fourth potential rower – Halvar, who is a man. You are free to put one of us women in another team and Halvar in our boat if that suits your idea of having mixed teams.

I look forward to the event!

Hi Raggi, When you register a team you can only introduce the name and surname of the team leader, for instance yourself. Once we get confirmation of registration/payment, we get in touch with the team leader to give some information and ask for the name of the other 2 members. We look forward to seeing the Norwegians in Barcelona!

Hi Seamus, We received a registration/payment made by Cecilia with an address under Seamus Hally. So the process worked. You should have received an email from us asking for the names of your crew. Regards!

Hi Sabrina! The concerts will take place inside Club Maritim de Barcelona, right beside the Maremagnum shopping centre from 4pm onwards. You can get your tickets at the door, from 15.30pm. A ticket is 5€ with a drink and children under 16 don’t pay. Before the concerts currachs will be raced along the Maremagnum Bridge from 1-4pm, an unusual show to watch in Barcelona, hope you can make it!
