The Day in Words:

The 5th Edition of the Mediterranean Currach Regatta took place in the Old Port (Port Vell) of Barcelona on March 16th 2013, coinciding with Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations. This was the first year the event was made public, allowing visitors and locals to view Irish culture and sport in the historical heart of seafaring Barcelona. There was something for everyone, with food, drink, live music and Irish dance setting the scene for the excitement that took place on the water. Estrella Damm, Magners, Kerrygold and Dawn Meats kindly provided food and drink for the event, that could only become a reality thanks to the support of Fundació de Navegació Oceànica de Barcelona/Consorci El Far, the Irish Embassy, and Tourism of Ireland, and our faithful and regular sponsors: the most important Irish pubs in the city.

A new three hand Connemara-style currach was launched before the race draw. It is the fourth boat in the Barcelona fleet, hand built by Mark Redden. With 22 teams taking part, the race was divided into a professional and an amateur category. A big contingent came from Ireland, representing Naomhoga Corcai, Coonagh Currach Club, Fergus Rowing Club amongst other clubs. A team also came from Norway as well as the large group of internationals that made up crews representing Irish bars, who annually sponsor the event. The course ran 300 meters along the ancient port wall, with the city’s yacht clubs as a backdrop. It made a great spectacle of the competing crews, with the crowds cheering on the rowers all along the pier. There was fierce competition to get to the big yellow buoy and make the sharp 360 degree turn before the sprint to the finish line.

This year the pro trophy was dedicated to Seamus Farrell, proprietor of the Quiet Man Pub, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. The crew representing Dunnes Bar (Audun Waage, Robert Kenny, Mark Redden) met stiff opposition in the graceful form of a boat load of springy Kerry ladies, but prevailed to keep the trophy in Barcelona. The final of the amateur league was contested by Fergus rowing club from County Clare, Ireland and Naomhóga Chorcaí from Cork city, Ireland. Naomhóga Chorcaí (Alan Murphy, Dobz O’Brien, Kieran Curtin) mastered the gusty conditions and took the title back to the River Lee.

300 invited guests were bolstered by passers by who stopped to enjoy the craic and spectacle. Music was provided by the wonderful ensemble of Nights Around The Table, and the magnificent Irish dance troupe Aires Celtes awed the crowd with their jigs and reels. The event is organised annually by Iomramh, an association comprised of a boat builder, Mark Redden (Ireland), the event coordinator, Ari Bastart (Catalonia) and rowing instructor Audun Waage (Norway). Brian Flanagan was the voice of the regatta, announcing the races and treating the gathering to his hilarious insights. We are looking forward to next year, with more craic, art and currachs all in the pipeline!
